Jakhoo Temple, Shimla
Amidst the lush greenery of the Shivalik range of hills on Jakhoo Hill, the highest point of Shimla, lies the Jakhu Temple, an ancient site dedicated to the Hindu god Hanuman. The Jakhu Temple houses the largest statue of Hanuman in the world, which can be seen from most parts of Shimla.
Overlooking the sister city of Sanjauli, the Jakhoo Temple provides a stunning backdrop amidst beautiful deodar trees and a large population of monkeys in and around Jakhoo Hill. It is located about 2 kilometres from the Ridge in the centre of Shimla, a drive of about 30 minutes. The construction of the Hanuman statue is a magnificent piece of engineering as it is at a height of over 8000 feet, making it the tallest statue in the world at that height above sea level. This surpasses the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio De Janeiro, which is 30 metres high (not including the 8 metre high base), at a height of 700 metres (2,300 feet). According to the legend surrounding the Jakhu temple, Lord Hanuman stopped at this place to rest before continuing his search for the Sanjeevani Booti to revive Lord Lakshman.
