Ridge, Shimla! Importance of The Ridge

Located in the heart of the 'British Summer Capital' Shimla, The Ridge is the most photographed sprawling street on Shimla Mall Road. The Ridge offers everything from shops with exclusive artefacts to spectacular views of the snow-capped mountain ranges. It is famous for many things, but is best known for shopping and being the social hub of the city. Shimla's rich past can be seen in the Gothic buildings in this part of the city. The street is lined with cafes, bars, boutiques, shops and restaurants that attract the many visitors to the famous Mall Road. It runs east to west along the side of Mall Road, connecting it to the famous Scandal Point at the western end. At the eastern end, it connects to Lakkar Bazaar, the most famous market for wooden handicrafts in Shimla

Importance of The Ridge

The Ridge is an indispensable part of Shimla. It is not only the cultural hub but also houses the lifeline of the city - the water reservoir with a capacity of 1000000 gallons of water. These water tanks under the hill supply water to the entire city. This water tank was built in the 1880s using only lime mortar

Various government events and fairs are also held on the Ridge. It is the venue for all important events in Shimla. The most famous festival held here is the Summer Festival. This festival is held in April or May and transforms the whole place into a colourful hustle and bustle. It is a five-day extravaganza and has been held every year since the 1960s. The main events of this festival include folk dances, flower shows, a food festival, an ice skating festival and the Himachali Film Festival

A winter sports festival is organised on the ridge. Shimla is the only place in Aisa that has a natural skating rink. The skating competition usually starts in December and continues till February. There is a lot of dancing and music at the festival.
